What the heck am I doing teaching hair?!

Hell has frozen over everyone. I, Megan Dugan, queen of the original sock-bun has a hair tutorial. I learned this style from my new hair guru Lauren Clark, a stylist at Robert Vetica salon located in the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA. I have always thought the best red carpet look is long, flowing hair perfectly waved to the side. I’ve never figured it out and always gave myself “mom hair” (no offense to moms), you know, random curls that look like bad homecoming ‘do’s? Curls have never been in my favor and my natural waves make me look somewhat homeless, or like a just released inmate.

The trick to this style is setting the curls, and FINGER STYLING. I never knew about finger styling until recently, and it’s changed everything. To get this trick at home, follow along!

A few of my favorite things… from Trish McEvoy!

trish mcevoy cosmetics

If I’ve ever done your makeup I’ve surely used Trish product on you. The brand, solely owned by Trish herself, is constantly adapting and becoming a household name. What sets Trish aside from other brands is the education behind the product. That’s why I have been so drawn to it over the years. Besides that, every product works wonders and is designed for women to be able to use even if they aren’t naturall blessed with the makeup gene. Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a pro makeup artist, there are essentials that beat out every other brand and I show them in my newest tutorial.

be Wary of Wen!

I am always on the lookout for my clients and readers. I’m also an ingredient snob so I thought this post was right up Beauty Styled’s alley! Read and be wary!

For all the Anti-Aging we do… why do we neglect the skin below our neck?

When is the last time you thought about anti-aging for your body? We spend so much time and money stressing over our face and yet our bodies show how old we are just as much, if not more. I have recently made it my mission to be just as conscious about my body and skin below my chin.

madonna old skin

Let’s think about what signs of aging our bodies show:

Sagging Skin, wrinkles, thinning skin, sun damage from years prior, age spots, veins, cellulite.. must I go on?

Elbows and Hands are the first places that show age!

Jennifer Aniston Elbow

If we are using so many peels, serums, cremes to keep our faces young, we should be doing similar treatments to our bodies. Of all the skincare I’ve put my clients in the last 2 years, the things no one wants to splurge on are body products. I get it- I’ve been you. I still am you in some sense.

Here’s why I (and I assume others) have blown it off:

1. The Time!! Who has the time? I have to force myself to put lotion on because it takes forever and I’m cold after the shower.

2. Product Education. I never condone running and buying something skin related because you saw an ad for it. Skincare is something that needs to be customized to you. That said, we do spend so much attention on our face because we are constantly seeing ad’s for skincare, hearing about new procedures in the news and comparing ourselves to our favorite celebs. We just don’t hear about body products.

Flashback: Remember that scene in Devil Wears Prada when Meryl Streep was talking about the blue scarf? She talked about it coming from the top designers and trickling down into department stores and eventually bargain bins? It’s the same with the Beauty Industry. The top beauty companies, say Estee Lauder for example, spend millions of dollars to research a particular product and after launching a new product with one of their brands (i.e. Origins, La Mer, Aveda..), then companies like P&G will launch cheap alternatives with one of their brands and pay to market it and thats what you’re seeing ads from. It’s going to take drugstore brands to start marketing “luxury” lotions or body serums in order for people to start becoming more aware.

3. It doesn’t seem as important.

All of this is crazy. We should love our bodies as much as our face and take the time to treat our skin equally! Here’s some of the best products I’ve found, recommend (and currently use):

Body Exfoliation

(These products kill those stubborn clogged hair follicles that make skin bumpy and gross!)

1. Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Body Towels

These have saved my legs. I use them about 2-3 times a week after the shower and before I put lotion on. Zero ingrown hairs anymore.

2. Kate Somerville Exfolikate Body

Exfolikate face is super famous, and it’s body sidekick is quickly becoming the world’s most popular body exfoliator. Try it!!

3. Mario Badescu AHA Body Wash

For $8 you can’t find a better AHA Body Wash! This helps exfoliate on a daily basis. Although it’s on and off your skin in a flash this really helps if you’re someone who somehow produces a lot of dead skin or if you have body acne problems.

Anti-Aging Moisturizers for Body

1. Ahava Body Lotion

My ultimate favorite body lotion for simple upgraded skincare

ahava dead sea body anti-aging moisturizer

2. Kate Somerville Nourish Body Lotion

I’ve been using this one for a week now and my skin is so supple and soft. It absorbs right away as well.

3. Arcona Pumpkin Lotion 10%

This one is AMAZING. I mixed it into my Ahava body lotion so it’s a bit diluted and pumps out better.

4. La Mer Reparative Body Lotion

Need I say more?

la mer reparative body lotion anti-aging

5. Shiseido Future Solutions Body Cream

Ultimate in Luxury Body Cream. This will lift, Firm, and give you back decades.

anti-aging body cream shiseido future solutions lx body

6. Amorepacific ‘Time Response’ Hand Cream/Bobbi Brown Hand Cream/ La Mer  ‘The Hand Treatment’/ Diptyque Hand Balm

Amore Pacific is great because you don’t need to reapply. Bobbi’s is heavenly for me as I destroy my hands with sanitizer and washing all day long. La Mer is really reparative, Diptyque’s feels like silk. Choose one, use it.

HAND CREAM!!!!!

7. Glytone Foot Cream (This stuff is unreal. Dead skin will just fall off in the shower the next morning. Sounds gross but whatever it’s true.)

Targeted Treatment

1. Kate Somerville D-Scar makes even the oldest scars fade not only in color, but in texture as well.

kate somerville d-scar, get rid of scars, anti-aging skincare

2. Glycolic/Salycilic Acid Peels on your body eliminate clogged pores and give you fresh younger skin.

What covers imperfections best? Color!

1. St. Tropez Foaming Self-Tanner with Mitt

2. Gleam by Melanie Mills

body makeup, glowing skin, gleam, melanie mills, makeup artist, tanned legs, dancing with the stars, pro discount

What is the most anti-aging you can do for your body after all of this?

S U N S C R E E N – if you’re doing anything with AHA’s (acids), you have to use sunscreen or you will make yourself more susceptible to sunburns and skin cancer.

1. Supergoop SPF 50 Sunscreen Spray. For the laziest of lazy this just sprays on and you’re good to go. use it as a “topcoat” over your anti-aging body lotion.

supergoop, sunscreen, spf 50, broad spectrum, uva, uvb, sunscreen spray, vacation, abroad

Why I love creme blush (you should too!).

Next time you’re on the hunt for a blush, challenge yourself and pick up a creme one. You can apply them with almost any type of foundation brush (a small stipple brush is my favorite) or your fingers.

My current and all time favorite creme blushes are:

La Prarie, Chanel, YSL, Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge, MAC Creme Blush and NARS Multiple Sticks.

1K Celebration Contest!

1900096_10202721208606727_871795106_n

The past year has been completely chaotic and amazing. A year ago I would have never believed you if you told me I would be in my new home in LA writing this blog.

So much has changed and I’ve adapted along with it. In the past year my followers have quadrupled and it’s made me more confident to upload these videos and editorials. I’m all about working one on one with clients but I’m learning quickly how great it feels to share not only what I know but also my true self online- exposed to the world. It’s help me learn a lot about who I am, and what I want.

I couldn’t do any of this without the support of my friends, clients and I guess now, fans (?? so weird!).

The other day I was seeing how my posts were doing and came across the realization that I have almost 1K likes on Facebook. I then checked YouTube and saw the same, then instagram.. the same.

It’s February 18th. Let’s get to 1,000 on each platform by the end of the month!

My makeup artist kit is HUGE. So huge, that I neglect a lot of it. I have so much that I would love to give back to you guys. I’ve made up 4 swag-bags that are full of new and lightly used (everything is sterilized with BeautySoClean and alcohol- as if I were going to use it on a job) products. There’s skincare, makeup, brushes.. etc.

As soon as I hit 1K on YouTube, I’m sending a package to one of my YouTube subscribers. Same goes on Instagram and Facebook.

By sharing my videos, following me on instagram and sharing my fb posts you could win BIG.

I don’t really know what’s going on with my Twitter. I have it linked to anything but don’t really use it as much, but hey, if that get’s to 1K I’ll send out something HUGE. If you want to follow me there I’m @MDMAmakeup.

I’m at 985 on instagram at the time of this post… the first package may go out today.

Share this post with the hashtag #winMDMA

Note: I’m choosing a follower at random on each platform at the time I hit 1,000. This isn’t a “be the 1000th person to…” contest. I’ll do my best to get a hold of you and announce the winners on each platform as well as on twitter @MDMAmakeup.

Always Bring Your Calculator to the Makeup Counter

I’m not shy to say I love luxury makeup and skincare. I know there’s a lot of blogs and commenters out there to shoot down products because of crazy price points. This post isn’t to defend certain products, as certain products are right for people, and wrong for others. This post is, however, an important lesson to always remember when shopping for products.

The beauty industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. There’s a million products out there, so how do you choose what to invest in? I have a 3-step system I always like to explain to my clients.

1. Find what ingredients work for you

Is it dark spots you want to get rid of? Wrinkles? Firming? Pores? Do some research on what ingredients REALLY work for you. Many times you can find specific ingredients to look for. Say you find that you need Mandelic Acid for dark spots.. Google “Best Serums with Mandelic Acid”. I’m sure you’re going to find a huge list. That’s just one example.

2. Do the Research (via Nordstrom Beauty Stylists & online reviews)

Once you find that ingredient you want to try, you need to find out which products people are loving and leaving. Nordstrom Beauty Stylists are wonderful because we literally try everything and get feedback very quickly from clients we’ve sampled and know what is a waste of time or not and aren’t afraid to tell you because we don’t work for any brand, yet are trained in all of them. Online reviews don’t hurt either, although it’s easy to spot when a competitor or all around hater is trying to sabotage the product (there are literally blogs dedicated to “debunking” Creme de la Mer.. when it’s an incredible product). Ingredients aren’t always just ingredients though. Let’s use La Mer for example. One thing I’ve read a lot online is that “it’s just seaweed and mineral oil!”. Not at all true. When doing research you can learn that a NASA Astro-Physisict named Max Huber (and his entire team) got burned very badly with rocket fuel in a lab experiment and he spent the rest of his life finding a cure for scars for us. He did over 6,000 experiments with different fermentation processes and different delivery carriers and after 12 years found a certain fermentation was delivered deepest with a specific mineral oil. That doesn’t mean you can go buy seaweed from the store and blend it with mineral oil and make your own La Mer. That would be the same thing as expecting blended grapes and water to turn into an amazing Pinot Noir. Long story short, do your research.

3. Do the MATH

Seriously- this. I worked with someone the other day who refused to buy a product for $60 and went for the $42 product even though she didn’t like it as much. I explained to her that the $60 was actually twice the size. She didn’t understand, so let me break it down for you with certain products I believe to be comparable. Treat the beauty counter like Costco! I find this to be so common sense but I find myself explaining this on a daily basis.

Find your common denominator, the ML or OZ.

Let’s start with an easy example I’m sure you’ve done before.

I totally love Jo Malone perfume. All the magical scents come in a 1oz and 3.4oz (sometimes even larger). So you’ve decided that new Peony and Blush Suede is the perfect scent for you this Spring. For $65 you can have 1oz of it. For $115 you can have 3.4oz. The larger one is $34 an oz. For $50 more, you can have 3 and a half times the amount, or 1.4 oz free.

Jo-Malone-London-Cologne-Peony-And-Blush-Suede

Now for a better example…

For the last 2 years my favorite daily peels have been the Dr. Gross Alpha Beta Pads. I have not one bad thing to say about them, they are amazing, they work. They come in various sizes, which using example 1, you can determine which is the best value for you.

Alas, if you go back to Step 2, you would know to look at the label to see what makes those pads work so well. Find out what the competitors are. Trish McEvoy (a personal Saint to me) has just released her Correct & Brighten Weekly Peel Pads. Same acids as the Dr. Gross, as well as many other peel pads. So which one should you go with (assuming you have tried both and both do not irritate your skin)?

Since Trish’s are much stronger, you need to use them just once a week. One box comes with 12. Dr. Gross’ comes with 30. The price for Trish is $125 ($10.42 per pad), the price for Dr. Gross is $86 ($2.87 per pad).

Just looking at price per pad, it would seem Dr. Gross is a much better deal, here’s the thing. You need to use those pads every day for them to be effective as they are intended. Are you really going to do that? If so, great. Trish’s you use once a week.

Still following me?

Dr. Gross’ pads are $86 for 30 days, making them $86 a month. Trish’s are $125 for 12 pads, making them last 3 months, taking it to $41.67 a month, and easier to use.

It’s a much smarter buy to go with Trish for this instance!

More breakdowns: Not saying these products are dupes for each other just using examples I’ve thought of recently.

Trish BB Cream ($85/1.7oz) vs YSL Touché Eclat Foundation ($60/1oz) = Trish’s is actually less expensive, and it’s packed with anti aging peptides

YSL Touche Eclat Foundation Review

NARS Radiant Creamy Compact Foundation ($38/0.42oz) vs. Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($60/1oz) = With the NARS compact being over $90 an ounce, It’s a much smarter idea to go with Armani.

NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation

There’s a lot of food for thought in this post, but hopefully it will help you out next time you feel overwhelmed!

There’s no such thing as the “Perfect Foundation”, so buy more than one!

Most agree, makeup is an art. I’ve always thought the different aspects of what makes it an art are fascinating. Take certain art pieces at galleries. Some things seem so simple and “anyone” can do it, but the art is the emotion it envokes from you. That’s getting a big heavy since we are about to just talk about foundation but the point I’ll make is that there is no perfect makeup for you.

I talk to women almost daily who need help finding the “perfect foundation”. Rubbish. There’s no such thing. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Yes, most of us will agree when something is just a bad product in general or when it’s the wrong color, but what happens when you take all the best foundations on the market and put them to the test on yourself? There’s going to be elements you like about each, and that’s why I sometimes need to have a pow-wow with clients and tell them “It’s okay to have more than one”. The idea is simply startling to some people.

Not only is it okay to have more than one, I recommend it!

Let’s change the word to “base” from now on since now there are Tinted Moisturizers, BB Creams, CC Creams and A to Z Creams (My eyes rolled so hard typing that but alas, it’s true).

I think first of all you need to look at your lifestyle and ask yourself if you’re a more than one base kind of person (I say person because I think it should be socially acceptable for men to wear tinted moisturizer/bbcream). What is your lifestyle like?

Most clients know the difference between a day time look and a night time look but would never think to do the same for their makeup coverage.

I have base I like for my days off (I love Amore Pacific Tinted Moisturizer, NARS Tinted Moisturizer and YSL BB Cream), base for work (medium coverage more natural ones like Cle De Peau Refining, YSL Temps Majeur, Armani Luminous Silk), and base for when I want to look really hot and “makeupie” (Dior Airflash, Cle De Peau Silk Creme, Dior Capture Totale, Kevyn Aucoin SSE).

I want to prove that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and take a totally unbiased set of HD photos using all high end foundations. So many people want to buy foundations based off of the advertisements or even based off of the fact their friend has it. Foundation is such a personal thing because the imperfections on your own face need to be covering to your skins liking, not your friends’. If you’re liking this post, please leave a comment about what foundation you like the most on me and why. Some colors are a bit off due to pulling them from my kit and not wanting to blend them in order to keep them true to their formula, so leave color out of your decision of what is best.

All photos are in their original format and untouched. Also, I got a little irritated towards the end as I’m personally extremely allergic to Bobbi Brown (the things I do for the love of makeup!).
