How to have the best glitter hair this festival season

paradisebeefI will come right out and say it- I used to loathe glitter. I called it the herpes of makeup. As a makeup artist it was always such a struggle to get it to lay where I wanted. The mediums I would have to mix it with were sticky or runny and I always wished there was something I could have in my kit that would be versatile for photoshoots. Something I could use for photoshoots, but put in the hair or use over body paint. With glitter becoming such a trend in the last year I decided to do something about it and I grabbed a few of my favorite skincare ingredients and got to work. A couple weeks later I felt the base was perfect and started adding tons of glitter and SPACEJAM was born!

The past few months have been so exciting because I’ve been able to see my product grow wings and take off. It’s caught the eyes of some of the best talent in LA and even wound up being featured by celebrity hair stylists at Coachella. I’ve had the luck of speaking to a few of them about what and how they used the products and am happy to share some alternative ways of making your own at home if lemonhead.la SPACEJAM isn’t your…jam…

Here’s two ways to get seriously trendy glitter roots at home:

I. DIY with hairspray and craft glitter via @desiraecherie of @maneaddicts

Products:

  1. Bobby Pins
  2. BLAX Hair Elastic
  3. Craft Glitter in Very Fine Gold or color of your choice
  4. R+Co Outer Space Hairspray
  5. Ouai Texture Hairspray
  6. Kardashian Beauty Metal Bristle Paddle Hairbrush

Steps via maneaddicts.com:

  1. Spray hair all over using Ouai Texture Hairspray.
  2. Create a center part all the way down the back of the headspace_bun_030-728x517
  3. Brush one section to the top of the head with a Kardashian Beauty Metal Bristle Paddle Hairbrush, and secure with a Blax hair elastic. Repeat on the other section.
  4. Spray each pony with OUAI Texturizing Hair Spray and French lace the hair for fullness.
  5. space_bun_032-728x543
  6. Twist hair down into a bun and secure with French hair pins. Use your fingers to piece the buns out for fullness; leave the ends out for added detail
  7. Spray R+Co Outer Space Hairspray down at roots and sprinkle glitter as desired.space_bun_047-728x505

II. The holy grail of glitter – SPACEJAM by @lemonhead.la

Products needed:

  1. Bobby Pins
  2. Small Clear hair bands
  3. SPACEJAM via @lemonhead.la
  4. Hair color applicator brush or synthetic paint brush

Once you have your product, get creative! You can follow my video above or do whatever you want with it. SPACEJAM brushes and washes right out so you can be as glittery as you want not to mention it’s especially great for one night stands. #sparklepillows

How to make Acai Bowls at Home

Moving to LA was the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. I get asked a lot by my Midwest friends, “What is the best thing about living in LA?” There’s no way to answer because the list would be 10 miles long. One overwhelming positive thing about living here is the abundance of healthy food and the overall celebration of healthy lifestyles. Coming from St. Louis & Chicago, where late night bars and 5AM pizza places were on every corner, Los Angeles is much more focused on a healthy active life for it’s residents. There’s free hiking all over the city, a groupon deal every day for new places to burn fat and an overwhelming growth of healthy “restaurants” such as Sunlife Organics, Beaming and The Harvest Bar to name a few.

While these places are popular stops for smoothies and organic cold pressed juices, my favorite thing to order is the Acai Bowl. It’s probably the healthiest thing I’ve ever eaten and you can feel the energy your body produces as you digest it. The downside is that these cost anywhere from $10-$15 a piece. Fed up with my $80/mo acai addiction, I went to Whole Foods this week and bought the ingredients to start making them myself. Trust me you guys- this is the easiest, most delicious healthy treat you can imagine! The best part is all of these health restaurants post their menu online so all you need to do is duplicate the ingredients.

The benefits of acai (not to mention the other ingredients) are plentiful! I’ve noticed a big change in my skin as well as hair growth. According to Global Healing Center, acai also has the following benefits:

Heart Health

Resistance to Harmful Organisms

Weight Loss

Skin Health

Helps with Digestive Issues

Helps with Respiratory System

Improves Cellular Health

Fights Cancer

Anti-Aging Effect (fights free radical damage from inside out)

Energy Boost

Better Sex!

Improves Mental Function

IMG_5954

So let’s get started! Here’s my personal shopping list, but feel free to adjust according to your taste

Bullet Blender (best buy ever!)

Organic Strawberries (frozen)

Organic Blueberries (frozen)

Fresh Fruit: Bananas*, Strawberries, Blackberries whatever your favorites are.

Acai Powder

Almond Milk (or Cashew/Hemp/Coconut/Soy)

Fresh Peanut Butter (or Almond/Cashew/Coconut Butter)

Toppings:

Chia Seeds

Cacao Nibs

Dried Coconut Flakes (unsweetened)

Hemp Seeds

Pumpkin Seeds

Bee Pollen

Raw Honey

Granola

I don’t use all of these ingredients in one bowl, but this gives you plenty of options to keep it exciting. The only thing you need to buy fresh is whatever fruit you want to put on top, the rest stays good for a long time.

Step 1:

Blend handful of frozen strawberries, handful frozen blueberries and half of a fresh banana (save the other half) with acai powder (1 TBSP), nut butter (1 TBSP) and 1/4C almond milk (or milk of choice). Sometimes I’ll throw 1/2 TBSP of chia seeds in the blender. (Because I HATE blenders, I actually use a bullet which works perfectly for 1-2 portions.) You want the mix to be consistent to sorbet so start with less vegan milk and add little bits more if you need to get to right consistency.

Step 2:

Add blended fruit mix to bowl. Slice up fruit and arrange around the top. I love fresh strawberries and blueberries on top. Top with 1/2 TBSP each of Hemp Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Cacao Nibs. Add granola if you’re extra hungry. Top with a swirl of Fresh honey (optional) and indulge!

UPDATE: more acai I’ve made this week:

Base: frozen blueberries, banana, #acaipowder, almond milk. Top: #granola#hemp#plums, topped with #TAJIN.

11750646_10206567807409293_3569823929828638593_n

Base: (all #organic) frozen strawberries, fresh banana, acai powder, cashews, almond milk. Toppings: #granola, banana, strawberries, #hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, #cacao nibs, blackberries

Namaste!

Color inspiration: Kristen Stewart

“Kristen Stewart” and “effortless” have always gone together. She has always had a certain style that mixes upscale with hipster accents but lately she’s been nothing short of breathtaking. Browsing random blogs two photos have jumped out at me this week that made me inspired.

She isn’t wearing a lip, but I feel like I always start the day or evening with a lip but a few hours later I don’t care anymore. I usually am working so much or living in the moment that I don’t remember (but actually don’t care) to touch up. It’s kind of a conundrum, I must own every color but I will only put it on once, haha. Maybe Kristen is the same. What I love about this look is  her eye makeup. I love the smokiness with the orangey tan color and can tell she has a winged liner, perhaps black gel, smudged with black/dark brown eyeshadow. Her brows are natural and groomed and she has a full coverage foundation on. Because she’s sponsored by Chanel and I know the brand pretty well, here is my product breakdown on this look.

Chanel Le Blanc De Chanel Multi-Use Illuminating Base

Chanel Perfection Lumiere Foundation

Chanel Eclat Lumiere Highlighter Face Pen

Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Multi-Color Powder

Chanel Ombre Essential Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Trace

MAC Cosmetics Pro Longwear Eyeshadow in Uninterrupted

Chanel La Ligne Professional Eyeliner Duo

Chanel Inimitable Mascara

Kristen Stewart Lipstick

This is the best I think Kristen Stewart has ever looked. Her foundation looks like Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk with a bit of translucent setting powder. If she has bronzer on, it’s light and dispersed. She has a pink blush on her cheekbones and groomed brows. I believe her lipstick is Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in #37 “L’exuberante”.

I can’t say how refreshing this look is. Her skin is flawless and natural with that bright pop of color. Right in time for Spring!

So many of my essentials for myself, and my clients are by Trish McEvoy. I wanted to challenge myself to use all one line to do my face and show how great it is. The only thing I used that wasn’t Trish is the brow product (simply because I don’t yet own the Trish Brow Pencil!). What other brands do you want to see featured in a “One Brand Challenge” video?

How to Wear Eyeliner as Eyeshadow

This is something I’ve done since I started wearing makeup. I think it’s an easy way to get a professional looking eye with very little work. Try it at home with your favorite gel liners! For more drama try black smudged out with a pop of shimmer in the center. Don’t forget to blend your edges!

(My earrings are Kathleen Whitaker and purchased from Mohawk General Store in Silverlake neighborhood of LA)

Laura Mercier Eye Base
MAC Dark Diversion Gel Liner (applied with MAC 219 Brush, Blended with MAC 217 Brush)

Brows are Dior Brow Pencil in Sable
Foundation I mixed myself, Concealer is Clarins Instant Concealer
Contour is Napoleon Perdis Boudoir Mist Look 3
Blush is Kryolan Cream Blush Palette
Lips are Soar Liner (MAC) with Rouge Dior 123 Lipstick

Makeup Mystery Theatre Episode 2: Concert Makeup!

I love these MMT videos because you’re in for the surprise along with me. When you’ve been doing makeup as long as I have or get to the point of owning as much makeup as I do, it almost makes it harder to plan out looks because there are so many choices! It’s like trying to order something at the Cheesecake factory.

Once I turn my camera on, all bets are off. I like the way this look turned out, I got tons of compliments that day and it was great seeing some old friends that night, I felt like a rockstar.
